Thinking About School Differently

It's been almost 10 years now that my wife and I have been involved in sponsoring kids to go to school through GLA's school sponsorship program.   Through that time, the number of children sponsored has grown dramatically.   This is a good thing because more children are able to go to school.

This is not a good thing because it means that many more families can't afford to send their kids to school themselves.

But this is also a challenge and it's a challenge I'd like your help overcoming.   Let me explain:

For the 2013-2014 school year, we have sponsored 325 children.   They don't all go to the same school, so the cost varies - but lets just use an average of $500 per student.

Tuition is due - 50% of it in October and the remainder in January.   That means that we need to come up with approximately $82,000 in October and $82,000 in January.   If we've got sponsors, what's the big deal?

The challenge is that most people (as I do) make their sponsorship donations monthly.   So that means that while I'm paying $42.50 per student for 12 months, GLA has to pay $250 of it up front and the other $250 in January - even though they won't get the entire amount from me until the next August.

That creates a bit of a cash flow crunch.   We have to come up with $82,000 in October and then we get it back at the rate of $13,500 per month (round numbers)

I'd like to avoid that crunch.    How do we do that?

Well, I'll have a number of additional ideas about that coming up, but essentially what I want to do is get to the point that the sponsorship fees that are paid during the 2014-2015 school year go to cover the 2015-2016 school year.

What's that going to take?   About $164,000.

Are we going to make that all up this year?   I don't know.   God knows and He hasn't told us yet.

But I know this.

There are currently 325 kids who are going to school this year that wouldn't without our help.

There are over 100 kids at GLA who need our help.

We can't let the cash flow crunch caused by the school sponsorship program impact the care of the kids at GLA.

We can't let the kids at GLA impact the ability of the kids outside of GLA to go to school.

So we need to figure out ways to do both.

I'll have more about that as the year progresses.   In the mean time, would you pray that God would open the right doors and make this a possibility?

Thank you for your support of our kids,
